I had quite the dream last night. The Dems sweep both houses of Congress by huge majorities in 2018. They then immediately launch parallel impeachment proceedings against Trump and Pence at the same time.
They get the federal courts to enjoin Pence from taking any succession-related action until the completion of the removal trials in the Senate.
Trump and Pence get removed on the same day. Thirty minutes later Nancy Pelosi is sworn in as president.
Thirty minutes later she fires the entire cabinet and all Trumpists in the White House.
Then she has two years to try to undo much of the harm that Trump has caused to the government and the country.
The Dems are too cautious to actually pull off something like that, which the Trumpists would label a coup d’etat. But they actually might soon have the RAW POWER to do that if they had the will.
One can dream!
Incidentally, there would be endless quibbling over whether Pence had committed the high crimes and misdemeanors necessary for impeachment. It might be hard to attack him in court proceedings. But impeachment is a purely political proceeding, and the Dems could define Pence’s offenses however they pleased.
